Been away for awhile....real life gets messy sometimes....so feeling anxious to get back to my creative life again....but with a different intention this time....a little bit back to the basics I guess, rediscover/redefine what I want to do and make. So thank you to all of you who emailed asking about when I will teach encaustic workshops next. I am sorry to say not anytime soon. Or I should say not in the intensive workshop format as I did before in my studio or at various venues doing demos and classes. I have been working full time outside of the studio so my time is currently limited and my goal is to teach less and just make work...make work, make work, draw, take photographs and document all of it...past and present and look ahead to a new, different approach with fresh eyes which will unfold on this blog. I am excited to be in the zone again....love going through all my hundreds/thousands of photos I"ve taken that I will slowly post on here. My photography has always been an essential part of my process and I am directing my creative journey back to my own personal path....which includes all the twists and turns. So let's see where this takes me!

Whenever things get a bit hectic around here I use my camera as way to slow down......I spent some time away from my busy studio/work/websites/teaching etc schedule to think about new plans, new paintings and new inspiration to keep me on track. These photos were taken various places on Oahu, Hawaii and are part of my ongoing photographic series titled "Tree Portraits".

Sketchbook Project Volume 4 Tour- Brooklyn Library Permanent Collection

I made another sketchbook this year for the upcoming Sketchbook Project Tour.....but this time I experimented with encaustic dipped pages and drawing on the wax surface. I have to say it didn't come easy but I am happy with the results and plan to do more. I love books as objects and I especially like keeping records of ideas for inspiration later.

This is the 4th Sketchbook Project and it will tour at least 5 cities in 2010 and will also become part of a permanent collection library. Books will be available complete with library cards for people to check out while in the gallery. See the Art House website or my schedule listed here to find out if it will be showing near you. Last month I was invited to be part of the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild's Tenth Annual 5 x 7 show which was at the Kleinert James Art Center in Woodstock, NY. I was happy to donate work while hoping to help support their exhibition programs and events during the year. Well.....my work sold in a flash to a local Woodstock gallery owner and I plan to become more involved as a member in the coming months. I am excited to get to know more artists living in the Hudson Valley. I am a big fan of Nancy Azara and Joan Synder who were part of this show as well.

10,000 Project Show at Art House Co-op Gallery

I was part of a show titled the "10,ooo Project" at the Art House Co-op Gallery in Atlanta last month. Everyone made work with the same word in mind and over 1000 people participated....I usually would do some kind of 2D format so I thought I would try something different. I love my camera and I having been playing around with images from this piece to see where I can push this idea......I see something brewing.

Art House Gallery has changed locations and is now in New York. Starting January 2010 Art House will reside in Red Hook in Brooklyn. This will be a great venue and I look forward to participating in many more group shows there. Coming up I will be posting photos of my work for "The Sketchbook Project Library" that will be touring several cities again in 2010 including the new location in Brooklyn. Congratulations to Shane Zucker and Steven Peterman, founders of this awesome co-op of artists.

As I teach painting classes out of my studio......I often think of those who helped me find my voice and the critical thinking necessary to to make work that is compelling and visually strong.

It has been many years now........but the inspiration, lessons and pure enthusiasm for drawing that I received in art school with artist and Professor Dale Leys has stayed with me and his influence is noted on my studio walls from his past show cards, small hand drawn portraits, and many parts and pieces of natural objects that look like bones and fossils. I can see how my love of surface and layering....... is and has always been part of his drawing style that you will be able to see in the following video of Dale working in his studio. The studio is exactly as I remember it and maybe Bob Dylan is still on the play list as well. His early recognition of my desire to make art my life long pursuit was critical at a time when a young artist could easily choose other paths.

The Canvas Project: Encyclopedia is showing now.

Here is a partial quote from the show......

"The Encyclopedia Project is a collaborative activity organized by Atlanta's Art House Co-op to bring together artists to create a visual lexicon of words provided to the participants at random. From a pool of over 6000 paintings, 1200 were chosen to represent a sample of this mass effort. The collaborators are from 48 states and 21 countries fulfilling Art House Co-op's philosophy of "bringing art to the masses" and creating both a physical place to share art, through the foundation, as well as a virtual space online for people to share their portfolios and sketchbooks.

The Project will be exhibited for 6 weeks in the Atlanta Airport Atrium Gallery and then travel to the Art House Gallery in Atlanta's art district, Castleberry Hill. The Art House Encyclopedia, Vol. 1 catalog will now be available at the opening on September 25, 2009."

I have been involved with several projects now with Art House. It has been an interesting way to get creative in a quick fast sketching kind of way.....like studies/ideas for later work.....Most if not all of my paintings take weeks or months to do and these past collaborative projects have been fun allowing me to think out of my personal box. It also connects me with other artists around the world who I may not have met any other way. I recently met Michelle Moode who was part of the Sketchbook Project earlier this year and will be in the upcoming 10,000 Project that I am also preparing work for as I write this.....Michelle was a visiting artist this summer at the Kirkland Arts Center and I was happy to meet her and see the"Michelle Moode Picture Show" as she called it. She makes wonderful work and writes about Seattle here.

The Art House Gallery in Atlanta has launched another world wide community art exhibition. The idea for this one is to make a visual encyclopedia on five mini canvases, each of which are interpretations of randomly given words to each artist participating. The Canvas Project - Volume 2 will be exhibiting soon at the Atrium Gallery in the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport from July 31 - September 4, 2009 and then opens at the Art House Gallery on September 25, 2009. A book titled "The Art House Encyclopedia VOL. 1" will be available July 31st for $20 at the Art House Gallery website.

Here are my entries for this year's Canvas Project. I have to say working this small 3" x 3" was a real challenge! So I decided to build up layers of wax to double the thickness of the canvas and use that as a starting point to carve into. You can see the thickness is this side view.

1. Take Route 1 North over the Tobin Bridge, and travel about 10 miles
2. In Peabody, (right after the Holiday Inn) take the I 95 South / Rt. 128 North exit (sign says WALTHAM /GLOUCESTER). Stay to the left to go Rt. 128 North towards GLOUCESTER
3. Continue on Rt. 128 North towards Gloucester
4. Take exit 18
5. Turn right onto Essex Street (Route 22 South) for 2 miles
6. At the first traffic light, you will see the Beverly Common and Montserrat's main academic building across the intersection
7. You MUST turn right onto Dane Street because Essex Street becomes one-way here
8. Take the first left onto Knowlton Street
9. Take the first left onto Winter Street (Essex Street runs perpendicular at the far end) and you will see the college in front of you.

The show will be at the 301 Gallery June 5 - July 3, 2009 in conjunction with the Annual Encaustic Conference at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA. I have been going to this conference since it started and it is now a wonderful international event. It was founded and directed by artist, curator and author Joanne Mattera who continues to invite speakers, guest panelists, and visiting artists that discuss critical relevant issues for those of us who are engaged in the multifaceted properties of encaustic paint every day. Joanne has a wonderful art blog as well addressing an array of contemporary issues, what's hot in the galleries, and her new"Marketing Mondays".

The Conference is June 5-7, 2009 with post workshops through June 1oth. A partial line up this year includes:

My Studio featured on Linda Womack's Embracing Encaustic Blog

A few years ago at the 1st Annual Encaustic Painting Conference, I met Linda Womack, a wonderful artist, instructor, and author from Portland, Oregon. We were both exhibiting work in the show "Hot Stuff" at the 301 Gallery at the Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA. Linda and Bill Womack have since authored two editions of their book titled Embracing Encaustic: Learning to paint with beeswax. When Linda is not teaching, painting or traveling, she chronicles her adventures in art on her wildly successful blog titled Embracing Encaustic - Adventures in Painting with Molten Wax. Her work is now showing in "Working in Wax" at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, CA. from May 3 - June 21, 2009.

We also met with local artist Ted Loomis, an encaustic painter and friend we met at the conference, to hear a lecture and see the work of Betsy Eby. Her exhibition Abundance was showing at Winston Wachter Fine Art here in Seattle. It was a nice opportunity to meet Betsy and see her beautiful work!

Dimensional Invention - Exhibition at Kirkland Arts Center

Last night I went to the opening of Dimensional Invention at the Kirkland Arts Center. Six artists from Seattle exhibit the development of their ideas through 2D and 3D installations. The exhibit features magical and fantastical creatures, clusters of sea-like forms, architecture inspired three-dimensional drawings, playful cloud installations using industrial materials, site-specific domestic environments, and structures that humanize architecture with a surprising amount of personality. Please visit Kirkland Arts Center as well as Art Zone in Studio 4/16/09 to view two great interviews of artist Whiting Tennis in his studio. So interesting to hear about his work and his process........

Art House - Sketchbook Project 3 gets a CNN Interview

Shane Zucker and Steven Peterman of Art House Gallery and Co-op in Atlanta, GA were interviewed by CNN to talk about the success of The Sketchbook Project - Volume 3 that has been touring around the U.S. this spring. It is now at the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) until April 16, 2009. We have yet to hear when this interview will air but I will post details as I get them. I love to see the sketchbooks from the show.......So keep posting those photos! Maybe eventually I will see a photo of my sketchbook in the mix of piles.

Sketchbook Project Tour - Brooklyn, NY

Shane Zucker and Steven Peterman, co-owners of Art House Gallery in Atlanta traveled around 4,420 miles so far getting the sketchbooks to various venues for the Sketchbook Project Tour. Thanks Shane and Steven! It was fun to see the opening night webcam and the huge amount of photos that were taken at each gallery. The following photos were taken by Julian Duron and Deborah Hilert at 3rd Ward in Brooklyn, NY. Go to 3rdward.com to learn more about this highly creative 20,000 sq. ft. artist's co-op facility. It was a highly attended event and writer Anna D'Agrosa writes "it reached insane capacity" by the end of the evening. I wish I could have been there too! My work is included in this sketchbook tour created by Steven Peterman and Shane Zucker who founded Art House artist co-op and gallery in Atlanta, GA. Art House is taking over 2700 sketchbooks to galleries and museums in Atlanta, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, St. Louis and Brooklyn NY this spring 2009. The Sketchbook Project -Volume 3 is a vast international collective of 64 page moleskin sketchbooks of the same size all with a theme of "everyone we know". I traveled a lot in 2008. One cold day in March I visited what is now one of my all time favorite museums.......I have been to many many museums and the Centre Pompidou -National Museum of Modern Art in Paris is the hottest spot on my list. I will post photos of work at a later date. Today I am simply inspired to share photos I took from the top floor of the Centre Pompidou. This view is considered one of the premiere views of the city. I have to agree.

I have always been inspired to create work that deals with extracting the essence of some aspect of nature. My current body of work titled “anchorage” is part of an ongoing series examining origins and connections. Much of my imagery is derived from aspects of trees, roots, veins, cells, knots, and twisting rope to address the ideas of being anchored, tied or firmly fastened to suggest strength, lifeline, vitality, continuum, nourishment and ancestral links. I use my most recent perspective as a mother to translate the dualities of nurturing, as one would cultivate bonsai. I am always reminded to build my own rugged wind-swept exterior and weather the occasional scarring that takes place. My process of incorporating rope, thread, string, fabric, ink and graphite with encaustic paint combines my drawing sensibilities with visual depth utilizing the inherent sculptural qualities of wax.

Trees-Part One: A Living Palette of Color and Texture

Trees have always been revered as having unusual strength and durability and are symbols of courage, fortitude, fertility, wisdom and longevity.

Somehow, in all my artwork over the years, I always include some reference to trees. My photo collection is full of tree portraits exhibiting bold textures, color, patterns, oddities, carvings, sculpture, autographs, scarring, peeling layers, branches, leaf skeletons and veins, moss, tree rings, reflections, shadows, roots, sacred trees and shrines, insect engravings and bark cloth. Just to name a few. Here is Part One of my research documenting numerous trees along with other images that mimic aspects of trees.

Two of my favorite books about trees are titled "Meetings with Remarkable Trees" and "Remarkable Trees of the World" by Thomas Pakenham. He pays homage to some of the largest and most ancient trees in the world, all with strong personalities.

I am pleased to be showing my encaustic mixed media work at MODE, Seattle's premier green organic salon. This show titled "anchorage" is part of an ongoing series examining origins and connections. Much of my imagery is derived from aspects of trees, roots, veins, cells, knots, and twisting rope to address the ideas of being anchored, tied or firmly fastened to suggest strength, lifeline, continuum, nourishment and ancestral links. I combine rope, thread, string, paper and fabric with encaustic paint to further reinforce this idea. Thanks to Joe Carling, co-owner and Selina Boon, Designer and art coordinator for supporting Seattle area artists!

This will be the Kickoff Event for the Artist Potluck Series this weekend. There will be grilling, Brazilian music, a presentation by Jamie Bollenbach and a live skit. This is the first of a monthly gathering for artists to share a meal, view new work and discuss art issues. The next gatherings will be the last Friday of every month at 6:30 pm and a friendly critique at 7:30 pm. Join fellow artists from visual arts disciplines including painting, printmaking, ceramics, and film.

Found Objects

I have collected found objects since I was a kid and I still get inspiration from odd shapes, old weathered surfaces, natural formations and remnants of lost forgotten personal possessions. Here are a few examples from various beaches in Kauai as well as honeycomb from my friend's bee hives. (More on that later...)

One of my favorite presentations at the National Encaustic Conference this year was "Encaustic With A Textile Sensibility or Medium For A Material Girl" by Daniella Woolf. Daniella Woolf's own work in textiles and encaustic has a wonderful textile sensibility as you can see on her website. This was part of a larger event, FiberPhiladelphia 2008 which consisted of 29 exhibitions and two symposia that examine the current explosion in the use of textile and fiber materials in the field of contemporary art.

Alki Beach, West Seattle

Yesterday I spent the day with my son at Alki beach in West Seattle for his school field trip. We had an excellent view of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Alki is a native word meaning "eventually" or "by and by" in Chinook Jargon that originated as a pidgin trade language of the Pacific Northwest.

There is so much to see during low tide. Here are just a few examples of what we encountered.

Winged Kelp with flat ruffled edges

This lovely kelp reminds me of fabric ruching......a sewing technique used to gather, ruffle or pleat. Beautiful.

Dall's Acorn barnacles

I always use things I see in nature as a basis for paintings. These barnacles naturally compete for space forcing them to grow quickly in wonderful cluster forms. I particularly love the marks they leave behind when they get scraped away. Check out this wonderful blog that uses barnacles in architectural design.

Here are orange and purple Ochre sea stars. Lots of soft-shelled clams, moon snails, red sea cucumber and shield-backed kelp crabs live on this rocky beach as well.

ART CHANGES EVERYTHING.........These words are the foundation of Montserrat College of Art, a small vibrant art school in Beverly, MA that hosted the 1st and now the 2nd National Encaustic Painting Conference June 6-8, 2008. Here is a big shout out to Conference Director, Joanne Mattera for your hard work organizing this event.

I was in Munich, Germany this past March and without knowing about it before arriving I kept seeing flyers randomly stuck around the city for a Mark Rothko Restropective. It was an obvious and recognizable image among everything I was trying to decipher in German around me.. It was also a few blocks away from the city center that I had already walked admiring the beautiful Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) built between 1867 and 1908 in the Flemish gothic style.

This was a wonderful exhibition curated by Oliver Wick who was also responsible for the last Rothko retrospective in Basel. More than 70 oil paintings and 40 works on paper were respresented from all phases of his career. It was especially interesting for me to witness my 5 year old son wearing a bright red coat and the only child in a jam packed gallery amongst the other viewers all in black winding his way through to reach a perfect two feet in front of huge canvases to get the full impact of Rothko's work. He felt this work without a doubt and left the show asking for a large canvas for himself. My work was done.

In a September 25, 1954 letter to Katharine Kuh, Rothko wrote that:

"Since my pictures are large, colorful and unframed, and since museum walls are usually immense and formidable, there is the danger that the pictures relate themselves as decorative areas to the walls. This would be a distortion of their meaning, since the pictures are intimate and intense, and are the opposite of what is decorative; and have been painted in a scale of normal living rather than an institutional scale. I have on occasion successfully dealt with this problem by tending to crowd the show rather than making it spare. By saturating the room with the feeling of the work, the walls are defeated and the poignancy of each single work…become[s] more visible. I also hang the largest pictures so that they must be first encountered at close quarters, so that the first experience is to be within the picture. This may well give the key to the observer of the ideal relationship between himself and the rest of the pictures. I also hang the pictures low rather than high, and particularly in the case of the largest ones, often as close to the floor as possible, for that is the way they were painted."

Rothko would also note on another occasion that "historically the function of painting large pictures is painting something very grandiose and pompous," but the reason he painted large pictures was "precisely" because he wanted to be "very intimate and human."
