Cornish College of the Arts - Indigo Painting Project

I have been working with Idalis Madrigal and Ryan Woolworth for a long while now and they recently completed a painting project outside of the Visual Arts offices....perfect way for them to leave their mark during their final semester at Cornish. They are graduating with their BFA degrees in May 2019. I have had the best time ever working with them and so looking forward to assisting with their BFA installation coming up soon!

Why Indigo Blue?

Well......my love of Indigo started in art school in 1989 when I was studying Fiber and Textiles at SIU-C. Our amazing textile dye studio had an Indigo dye vat literally going all the time. Then later in 1994 as a graduate student I studied natural dyes and Indigo in Japan....one of the premiere places to learn about it.... So one of my final gifts to them (Idalis and Ryan) was to get acquainted with this amazing color even if they didn't know it at the time.....Indigo dye has an incredibly rich history and will always influence my research and my future artworks.

New Work: New Textile Series

This new work is an intimate small scale series of saturated encaustic on fabric mounted on muslin. I was making these last fall and exhibited them for a September While Supplies Last event curated by Anthony White, a 2018 Cornish graduate. Since then.... they started to inform the large scale work titled In One's Element, 2019 that I exhibited in the Cornish Staff Exhibition. (See other posts)

Check out details about next WSL event in February here......
February 22, 2019 at Mount Analogue 6-9pm.

New Work: Encaustic

Finished this work for the Cornish Staff Exhibition last month.......by far the largest of my encaustic paintings to date.....Changing scale in encaustic dramatically increases weight but I am super stoked about this new direction. This work is highly layered so I am including extra detail photos to get the full tactile surface quality.

Exhibition News: 2019 Curating Cornish Staff Exhibition

I had a wonderful opportunity this year to curate an exhibition of 24 artists on Staff here in the Main gallery at Cornish College of the Arts. This opened a door for me that I am super grateful for and I am definitely planning to curate more in the future. Thanks to all who attended the opening events and to all of the participating artists! Plus a shout out to Ryan Patterson who co-organized this project and my gallery assistants Idalis Madrigal, Senior in Art and Ryan Woolworth , Senior in Design.
