November Exhibition News

Last week marks 10 years I have had the opportunity to work at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. Things have changed quite a bit in that time around campus with changing studio locations and upgrades, several major renovations including the 9th Ave Gallery, Jon and Mary Shirley Fabrication Studios, Dance Studios and the construction additions of the Behnke Gallery and Raisbeck Auditorium which hosts an incredible visiting artist program as well as music and film productions.  This year my colleagues and I are navigating even more interesting horizons as we recently merged with Seattle University only a few months ago. With all of these projects completed, I am excited to share we are about to open our Staff exhibition this week at our Behnke Family Gallery with a great line up of fellow Cornish artists curated by Robert Campbell, Cornish Art Professor.  After the opening, the gallery hours are Thurs/Fri/Saturdays 12pm - 5pm. Closed for Thanksgiving Nov. 27 and 28.

Address: 1077 Lenora Street, Seattle, WA. 98121

Curator's Note:

Cornish College of the Arts has a long-standing tradition of celebrating the individuals who sustain and enrich our community - those whose keep our studios, library, and facilities vibrant year after year. Currents continues that tradition, honoring the staff members who not only support Cornish behind the scenes but also maintain dynamic and evolving art practices of their own.

This exhibition marks a moment of renewal as Cornish merges with Seattle University, bringing together our extended community of students, staff, and faculty. The fourteen artists featured here are not only practitioners of exceptional caliber but also mentors, collaborators, and daily sources of inspiration. We invite the public to join us in celebrating their diverse creative voices and the powerful currents of creativity that connect them all.

Cheers!..... to the Art Dept. faculty celebrating with the graduating class of 2024 at Cornish College of the Arts. Students completed their BFA thesis exhibition at our 9th Ave gallery in April and will be exhibiting highlights from this group show at the Hutch in Seattle later next fall. It has been a truly amazing experience working with these dedicated, exceptional, and inspiring group of artists, educators and dear friends for almost a decade. I am so grateful for all we accomplished and contributed together to foster such talented students year after year.

Photo Series - "I am Here"

Here are a few additions to my "I am Here" photo series that I started last summer. These are from creative spaces at Cornish and coincide with my REMNANTS post back in May.

Cornish College of the Arts - Indigo Painting Project

I have been working with Idalis Madrigal and Ryan Woolworth for a long while now and they recently completed a painting project outside of the Visual Arts offices....perfect way for them to leave their mark during their final semester at Cornish. They are graduating with their BFA degrees in May 2019. I have had the best time ever working with them and so looking forward to assisting with their BFA installation coming up soon!

Why Indigo Blue?

Well......my love of Indigo started in art school in 1989 when I was studying Fiber and Textiles at SIU-C. Our amazing textile dye studio had an Indigo dye vat literally going all the time. Then later in 1994 as a graduate student I studied natural dyes and Indigo in Japan....one of the premiere places to learn about it.... So one of my final gifts to them (Idalis and Ryan) was to get acquainted with this amazing color even if they didn't know it at the time.....Indigo dye has an incredibly rich history and will always influence my research and my future artworks.

Exhibition News: 2019 Curating Cornish Staff Exhibition

I had a wonderful opportunity this year to curate an exhibition of 24 artists on Staff here in the Main gallery at Cornish College of the Arts. This opened a door for me that I am super grateful for and I am definitely planning to curate more in the future. Thanks to all who attended the opening events and to all of the participating artists! Plus a shout out to Ryan Patterson who co-organized this project and my gallery assistants Idalis Madrigal, Senior in Art and Ryan Woolworth , Senior in Design.
